A Brotherhood Forged in Persecution: A Call for Unity

The history of the Civil Rights Movement is filled with profound stories of solidarity and mutual support. One of the most significant alliances formed during this time was between the Jewish and Black communities. From the outset, Jewish people have stood alongside the Black community, recognizing a shared struggle against persecution and discrimination. This bond is not merely a matter of historical record; it is a testament to a shared human experience marked by resilience and the fight for justice.

Throughout history, both Jews and Black people have faced unimaginable hardships. The Holocaust remains one of the most horrific events in human history, with its survivors carrying the scars of that atrocity. Similarly, the Black community in America bears the legacy of slavery and the oppressive era of Jim Crow. Both groups understand the pain of being marginalized and persecuted. This shared history of suffering has been a foundation for a powerful alliance.

In the 2024 election, this solidarity was once again evident. A significant 80% of Jewish voters, including a remarkable 88% of Jewish women, stood with the Black community by casting their votes for Kamala Harris. Though this was not enough to secure a victory, it underscored a long-standing commitment to support and uplift one another.

However, the tides of discrimination have shifted, and now, the Jewish community finds itself in a precarious position. In the aftermath of the October 7th attack by Hamas and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Jews have become targets of hostility and prejudice, not only in Israel but also in the United States. The climate on college campuses, where Jewish students face harassment and intimidation, highlights this growing vilification.

It is crucial to recognize that targeting the Jewish community does nothing to advance the cause of peace for Palestinians or those living in Gaza and the West Bank. Instead, it perpetuates a cycle of hatred and misunderstanding. We must rise above these divisive tactics and build bridges of understanding and support.

Now, it is time for the Black community to stand firmly with our Jewish brothers and sisters. Silence is not an option. We must speak out against injustice and support those who have stood by us throughout history. As we extend our gratitude to the Jewish community for their unwavering support, let us also commit to standing with them in their time of need.

To our Jewish friends, I say this: Thank you for having our backs. Your support has been invaluable, and we owe you a debt of gratitude that words cannot fully express. Let us continue to walk together on this path towards justice and equality, united in our shared humanity.
